This renovation features many appliances including: 2 ovens, gas cooktop with stainless exhaust hood, large side by side refrigerator, a beverage fridge and wine fridge in the island, a microwave and a dishwasher. The features include cabinetry in Bamboo Veneer, a step in corner pantry, a recessed corner sink and an island accommodating two sinks with a granite countertop “melding” into a glass eating area with a stainless ledge below.
The kitchen was featured in an article showcasing “Kitchens on Parade” that Susan was involved in for several years in London Ontario. Here’s an excerpt from the London Free Press article on the event from September 12, 2009:
“Susan Orfald, interior designer with Hutton Bielmann Design Inc., also believes designing with function in mind is the key to success.
Take the kitchen Orfald designed for Debbie Lane homeowners Pauline and Terry Lee, for example. It was created to accommodate a busy family.
“I go back after people have lived in the new space for a while and ask what they’d do differently – and so far, nobody has wanted to change a thing. I like to make spaces comfortable,” she said.
When people go through the kitchen and say, “I could live here,” that’s exactly the reaction Orfald wants.
The Lees, who do live there, “wanted a better working environment,” said Pauline Lee. They wanted to update the 1980s style, upgrade materials and appliances and expand the kitchen, duplicating some elements of a recent kitchen reno of their Florida home. “We knew a lot of what we wanted,” she said A textured wall with overlapping layers of several colours in the front entry was the starting point. It inspired choices in tiles and cabinets.
Most of the time, four Lees are at home, but when their older children return, the kitchen needed to accommodate seven. Plus, they hold frequent dinner parties and a few large gatherings of as many as 60 people.
“We’re absolutely thrilled with the results,” said Lee.
The new kitchen includes a step-in pantry with a counter, plus three refrigerators – a side-by-side, wine and beverage – freezer drawers, two ovens, cooktop, dishwasher, microwave and three sinks.
“The main feature is the island with a counter that goes from granite to a flush glass extension that has a stainless steel shelf below,” Orfald said. “It’s where the family gathers. The glass and stainless steel help it sparkle.”
If the design’s primary goal was to create a space for entertaining friends and family, the Lees “also wanted a wow factor,” Orfald said. “
